Passenger from Brazil arrested attempting to smuggle 12 kg of cocaine into Thailand A Turkish citizen was arrested at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport on charges of smuggling a large quantity of drugs. In his luggage, 12 kg of cocaine hidden in coffee and chocolate packages was discovered. According to a statement from the Customs Department, the Turkish citizen was detained on June 25 after arriving on a flight from Brazil at Suvarnabhumi International Airport. "During a baggage inspection, category 2 narcotics (cocaine) were found hidden in bags of coffee and chocolate. The total weight of the drugs was 12 kg, with an estimated value of 36 million baht," the customs press release stated. The foreigner was charged with illegally importing a category 2 narcotic into Thailand. The case was initiated under both the Customs Act and the Narcotics Code. Photographs published by the Customs Department show the cocaine packaged in numerous bricks hidden inside containers of ground coffee and chocolate. It is believed that the smugglers intended to conceal the drugs from sniffer dogs and customs control officers in this manner. The Customs Department statement does not mention the suspected origin of the cocaine shipment or its recipients.
